Old enough to vote

Sir, – In the Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI opinion poll (News, March 7th), the age profile of support for each of the two main parties will be a cause of concern for them.

Some 66 per cent of Fine Gael and 64 per cent of Fianna Fáil voters are over 50, whereas 74 per cent of Sinn Féin voters are between 18 and 34 year olds.

If Sinn Féin can retain its support as their voters age, it will supplant the supporters of the “establishment” parties.

For Fianna Fáil in particular, there is no future in being the party of “elderly male farmers”. – Yours, etc,
