Nphet still needed

Sir, – We hear that the role of the National Public Health Emergency Team will reduce over the coming weeks as we emerge into a new phase of living with Covid-19.

However, we are facing a new public health emergency because of the excessive number of people on HSE waiting lists (900,000 and counting).

Surely Nphet should at least offer suggestions as to how their colleagues in the HSE can address this? Can I start with no more of the “9-5, Monday-Friday” model of delivery?

When vaccination supply ramped up so too did the hours of vaccination centres. High numbers had to be vaccinated quickly due to pressures on our health service. The HSE chief Paul Reid should now be applying the same approach to everyday service provision.
