Legal eagles and dogs’ dinners

Sir, – None of your columnists or letter writers seem to have made the connection between the Attorney General’s extraordinary description of the Judicial Appointments Bill as a dog’s dinner and the successful campaign by the legal profession to emasculate the legal services Bill.

The troika had insisted on opening up the legal profession to competition (as with the successive public sector pay cuts, which of course were implemented) but the legal profession, through lobbying and undermining Alan Shatter, reduced the Bill to a paper tiger.

The legal profession will not accept accountability and hence its vitriolic opposition to a legal appointments board dominated by civilians. Our elected politicians (the Government) will of course collapse like a house of cards. – Yours, etc,

DONAL McGRATH,
