How to tackle bogus self-employment

Sir, – In Fiona Reddan's excellent article ("Improving the lot of bogus self-employed workers", Business, April 17th), she asks, "What can be done?"

Although a range of measures is required to tackle this and other labour abuses, the single most effective remedy would be to switch the burden of proof so that an employer has to show that a worker is not in an employment relationship.

There must be an assumption of employment unless an employer can prove otherwise. – Yours, etc,
