Halloween and fireworks

Sir, – It is prohibited by law to sell, purchase or be in possession of fireworks (which are explosive devices).

I wonder to whom does this law apply given the fact that our entire population of animals has been terrorised by fireworks for the past number of weeks and, in particular, at the weekend of Halloween?

Where is the justice?

Sir, – Over the Halloween period – including this week – Dublin has sounded like a war zone with multiple detonations of fireworks, all illegal under section 60 of the 2006 Criminal Justice Act.

Since fireworks cannot legally be purchased in the Republic, they may be presumed to originate from Northern Ireland.

This tells us that the Border cannot be made secure and that gardaí are pretty ineffectual, even in the capital.
