Garda and oversight

Sir, – Dr Vicky Conway writes that the root of the public's damaged view of the Garda is due to the failure to establish effective policing oversight (Opinion, November 13th).

In my view, the real problem with the Garda is that they are simply not there.

Instead of deterring crime, as they once used to through foot patrols in our towns and cities, the Garda now wait for crime to happen.

Recent public concern about a lack of visible policing is entirely justified. New oversight bodies won’t change this.
