Sir, – We are told that the provision of “smart electricity meters” will, among other things, make it easier for consumers to switch their energy provider. It is easy to see where this will lead. Just as in the telecoms industry, different energy providers will offer “schemes” that are so differently structured as to be impossible to compare, and the consumer, once again, will be baffled and gulled. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – In this increasingly Big Brother environment, I am pretty sure I don’t want a smart meter until I am convinced they are safe, and from what I have seen on a variety of BBC programmes, they are not safe. I don’t know when I last saw someone from Electric Ireland visiting to read my meter. As a not very treasured customer, I know what I will tell them to do with their smart meters. – Yours, etc,
