Disestablishment and the church

Sir, – It is unfortunate that your headline appears to have conflated Britain with England (“Stamp marks 100th anniversary of Church of Ireland break from British church”, News, January 7ah).

There is not and never has been such a thing as an established “British Church”; the Scottish Church remained independent of the English Church following the Acts of Union in 1707.

That the Acts of Union in 1800 united the Irish Church with the English Church (and not a British Church) is obvious to anyone who has opened the title page of the pre-disestablishment prayer books of the United Church of England and Ireland. – Yours, etc,

GEORGE
