Child abuse close to home

Sir, – As I listen with disgust to the reports of child abuse in the US, I am immediately reminded of the abuse of Irish children by Irish politicians.

The criminal lack of life-enabling services for our special needs children goes unheeded. Speech therapy so that they can have basic communication, physiotherapy so that they can walk and sit properly, occupational therapy so that they can fasten buttons to dress themselves and carry out the most basic of bodily cleaning.

These are our own children, this is not just about their dignity but their life.

Surely our leaders and the media should be hammering away at these abuse issues? Sadly it is much easier to criticise someone in another jurisdiction. – Yours, etc,
