Cancellation fees and price of electricity

Sir, – In February 2022, I agreed a 12-month contract for the supply of electricity with Bord Gáis Energy. In March 2022, I read in the newspaper that Bord Gáis Energy will increase their electricity charges (both standing charges and meter usage charges) by 27 per cent, effective from April 15th, 2022.

I checked with Bord Gáis Energy and was informed that the price increase will apply to my contract. I was also informed I would be subject to a cancellation fee if I changed electricity provider.

I note in the case of telecommunication providers and other service providers a price increase within a contract period allows the consumer to change provider with no cancellation fees. Why is this not the same with electricity providers?

The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) states: “The CRU would also encourage customers to shop around among energy suppliers to get the best possible price and service deals.”

How is this possible when a cancellation fee applies?

This is something the CRU needs to address as it prevents fair competition and gives an unfair advantage to the energy provider to increase prices at will, and the consumer who is tied into a contract cannot change provider due to expensive cancellation fees. – Yours, etc,
