Boys Town legacy lives on in Sligo

Sir, – It was an important reference on the part of Bishop Kevin Doran to inform us that Edward Flanagan received his education at Summerhill College, Sligo, before emigrating to the US ("Boys Town priest lived life of prayer and care", December 12th).

As a former pupil of Summerhill, I can testify that many a happy day was spent in the Fr Flanagan Hall. It was named in his honour, the location of both PE and house exams, to name but a few activities. It was truly fitting that when a state of the art school was built on the grounds a few years ago, the new gym kept his name. This ensures that current pupils wearing the “blue jumper” know truly Fr Flanagan’s legacy lives on. – Yours, etc,

STEPHEN O’HARA,

Chaplain, Coláiste Choilm,
