Best actor and best actress

A chara, – I am happy to agree with Dr Vincent Kenny (Letters, February 27th ).

Here in France, the land of Molière, the equivalent words actrice and acteur have never posed a problem. My French friends are baffled that it is an issue in the English-speaking world. They are also mystified that the word "actor" should win out and be imposed on both genders. Why not call everyone "actress"? – Is mise,

Sir, – The award for best actor for the past two years at the Oscars (Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill in 2018 and Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in 2019) seem to owe more to the make-up experts than anyone else.

Are impersonations rather than interpretations the new criteria for such awards? – Yours, etc,
