Bad timing on Brexit vote?

Sir, – In “Brexit wake-up call” (November 20th), a letter-writer mentions that “David Cameron announced the EU referendum in February 2016”.

That is when the exact referendum date was announced, but Mr Cameron pledged the referendum in his “Bloomberg speech” of January 2013, which led to an inordinately long lead-in period of almost 3½ years and contributed in no small way to the eventual outcome. – Yours, etc,
