Sir, – Nautical terms are both silly and unnecessary (Mary Gallagher, Letters, June 25th).
Why does my bed become a berth when I go on board a ship?
Why must I go fore and aft when I want to go forward or behind? Why have cabins, saloons and galleys?
Most of all, why, when sailors talk about using the head, are they not referring to their thought processes? – Yours, etc,
