A volte face on rural broadband

Sir, – In an article published in your newspaper no less than 20 years ago (Irish Times, September 4th 1998), Eoin Licken quoted Etain Doyle, director of Telecmmunications Regulation, as stating that “Radio-based technology is how Ireland is going to deliver the Internet to every home.”

She added that communities which prevented this would pay “a very high economic price.” This was in the context of fears relating to alleged safety issues with mobile technology.

How times have changed. Where there was once bitter opposition to the technology that would enable rural broadband, the communities in question are now strenuously demanding it. – Yours, etc,

JOHN FAGAN,
