Cut costs and abolish Ifac

Watchdog is consistently ignored with a gentle pat on the head

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – If the Government needs to look at some cost-cutting measures, they could consider abolishing the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (“Budget puts public finances on worse trajectory, watchdog warns”, Budget, October 6th).

It is clear that this watchdog body, which was established to provide some common-sense advice against misspending by Government, has no role whatsoever other than to consistently warn against how the Government is handling the public finances and to be ignored just as consistently with a gentle pat on the head and some plámás about how important their advice is. – Yours, etc,

SEÁN LEAKE,

Terenure,
