Sir, – A common sight on roads across the country is a car using the automatic light setting, with only the front lights illuminated and no rear lights. Drivers often assume their full lighting system is active.
The Road Safety Authority says daytime running lights do not illuminate the rear. Gardaí advise using dipped headlights in darkness and poor weather to ensure tail lights are on.
The Department of Transport should examine this issue and require manufacturers to ensure rear lights operate automatically with the front lights.
Dipped beams and rear lights should also activate in poor visibility. Drivers should not have to guess whether their car is visible from behind. – Yours, etc,
