Michael O’Leary must put in the work to prove he’s sorry

It takes more to develop empathy than avoiding the use of offensive words

Sir, – Reflecting on Michael O’Leary’s welcome apology, I recall the sage advice of a military veteran: “A lesson identified doesn’t turn into a lesson learned unless it comes with corrective action.” (“Ryanair chief Michael O’Leary apologises over describing competitors as ‘rapists’,” September 18th).

While efforts to improve one’s use of language are laudable, such endeavours do not necessarily lead to better understanding of an issue or enhanced empathy. These qualities can bring meaningful cultural change. This is one for Michael O’Leary, Ryanair and us all to reflect upon more at this point. – Yours, etc,

BRENDAN LENIHAN,

Ovens,
