Sir, – When I was a young one, we were always told to give our seat to an older person when travelling on public transport.
Now I’m that older person travelling on a train that is packed to the roof and not a seat to be had.
My weary body stands proudly watching and hoping that one of the many young ones will offer me a seat. Surely they will, I think hopefully.
But no, it wasn’t to be. As I arrive at my destination and take my weary body home, I can’t help wondering: maybe old-fashioned manners don’t exist or maybe, just maybe, I don’t look old enough. I’ll go with my second thought for now because I do like to think that manners are still a thing. – Yours, etc,
