Student accommodation is left to the mercy of private-sector profiteers

Sir, – Is it any wonder that the cost of on-campus accommodation continues to rise year-on-year when State investment into publicly funded student accommodation has all but vanished?

Under the current Government strategy, the responsibility for tackling the student accommodation crisis is delegated entirely to private developers; the same developers who profit from the exploitation of students.

Students and their families will see no relief as long as the market continues to be dominated by private developers, whose interests are served by extortionate student rents. – Yours, etc,
