Sir, – Whether it was in the incarnation of a commitment on the big screen, as a musician of renown and skill, as a strident advocate for social justice and as a father and husband, his understated yet vibrant and strong personality always shone through. Travel well, Outspan – a nation will miss you. – Yours, etc,

RONAN BYRNE,

Shankill,

Sir, – Glen Hansard, perhaps more strikingly than any other figure in Ireland’s cultural life, truly embodied the sentiments expressed in William Blake’s poem Eternity (the one that starts with: “He who binds to himself a joy”). How blessed we all were to share that joy with him. – Yours, etc,

KEVIN WHELAN,

Moycullen,

Co Galway.
