Sir, – The letters of July 28th from Dave Robbie and Padraic Murray on MetroLink costs both haili from southside Dublin. Perhaps the letters were somewhat provocatively published in a bid to have northsiders running for their pens in response?
As a “native” of Dún Laoghaire and a mere blow-in to Swords of 20 years I may not “yet” be qualified to take up that gauntlet.
Robbie wonders how many houses could be built for the same amount. Murray answers with a figure of 50,000 and suggests a few bus lanes would sort out the transport situation instead.
Maybe not 50,000, but thousands of the new homes popping up in Dublin are in Swords, Donabate and surrounds. The Swords “Express” already takes more than an hour get to the city in peak-hour traffic, even using the Port Tunnel.

Recently, crossing through Swords itself has taken up to 40 minutes. The metro will serve the upsurge in population sustainably.
Perhaps a few more high-rise apartment blocks in Dún Laoghaire and Booterstown would suffice instead to even the load? I hear from the folks at home they have good bus lanes there too. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Dave Robbie’s reference to the MetroLink as a vanity project unfortunately shows a huge lack of understanding regarding our transport infrastructure deficit.
Of course all governments have to make choices on how our taxes are spent. Those choices include providing a reliable and suitable transport system for all citizens.
MetroLink will have a life-changing, positive effect on many people’s transport requirements both for work and social needs, people who are not so lucky to have the excellent Dart service that Robbie can enjoy in his area, which, incidentally, is also benefiting from significant investment and upgrading. – Yours, etc,
