Sir, – While sitting in my bed in the coronary ward of Waterford University Hospital (WUH) recently, I noticed Lara Marlowe’s article in your paper about the dangers of swimming in the cold waters of the North Atlantic Ocean and her subsequent trauma and rescue.
My interest in the article stemmed from the fact that I had experienced a similar fate when swimming in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Co Waterford the previous Friday.
I experienced a similar rescue and ended up in WUH.
Whereas Lara says she was lucky that this misfortune, if it were to happen, befell her in France, I must admit that my experience in WUH was second to none.

From the people on the beach who came to my aid, to the paramedics on the ambulance, to all the staff in the Emergency Department in Waterford and the treatment in the hospital ward was all second to none. This is regardless of reports of poor hospital emergency rooms in Ireland. – Yours, etc,
