Sir, – As the Leaving Certificate concludes, spare a thought for those whose lasting legacy from their school years was not achievement or opportunity, but the trauma of abuse. The recent Bill Kenneally report, together with the case involving Jeffrey Donaldson, serves as a stark reminder that the effects of abuse endure for decades and leave an indelible mark on victims’ lives.
Given what we already know about the devastating and lifelong impact of abuse, why does so much of the redress process continue to absorb resources through scoping exercises, legal fees and consultancy costs?
Should the priority now not be to alleviate survivors’ suffering rather than repeatedly documenting the impact of harms that are already well established? – Yours, etc,
