Removing religious ethos from schools is fundamentally illiberal

All schools should be free to pursue their own ethos

Sir, – Simon Lewis’s article on modern Communions is food for thought (“I’m a school principal. I find it unsettling what First Holy Communion has become,” May 28th). While he makes valid points regarding the over-commercialisation of First Communion celebration, he is ultimately arguing for is the marginalisation of religious education from Catholic schools.

This is fundamentally illiberal. Schools are entitled to their religious ethos. A truly liberal society is one where a thousand flowers bloom. All schools should be free to pursue their own ethos. This is the very essence of liberalism. – Yours, etc,
