Sir,- Reading Ray Burke’s interesting article (Irishman’s Diary, May 5th), it reminded me of my small involvement in the project.

As a young lad living in Salthill, Galway, I had a small book containing the names of numerous neighbours. I went around the neighbourhood each week to collect a half crown and mark the payments in my book.

Whether I can take any credit for the building of the cathedral is another question. – Yours, etc,

Jim Griffin,

Sandymount,

Sir, – Having just read Ray Burke’s Irishman’s Diary about the funding of the building of Galway Cathedral for the then enormous sum of under £1 million, I am reminded of a couple of monikers that went the rounds at the time. One was The Taj Micheal and the other, less kindly, Browne’s Folly.

One can only imagine what would be going around in today’s digital spaces. – Yours, etc,

Fionnuala Dunne

Sandycove,

Dublin.
