Problematic parking at Irish train stations

Finding a space is rarely easy – we can do much better

Letters to the Editor. Illustration: Paul Scott

Sir, – Car parking at rail stations is becoming increasingly problematic. Those who choose to be environmentally aware and reduce their carbon emissions are hampered by the lack of vision of both politicians and train operators in terms of providing adequate spaces to facilitate an increasing trend in people using public transport, and trains in particular.

The forced displacement of parked cars to private roads and housing estates is causing a backlash to the whole concept of using public transport. We can do much better.

Is there a public sector plan to increase capacity or build two or three-storey car parking at busy train stations?

In the interim, can the Government consider funding strategically placed park and ride facilities with shuttle bus provision to meet public transport demand and to coincide with timetable provisions? – Yours, etc,

BRIAN ROWNTREE,

Ardee,

Co Louth.
