Sir, – Following on from the letter about dogs on Bull Island, (March 16th), I am starting to think Sandycove beach in south county Dublin should be renamed Dog beach.
A substantial number of local and visiting dog owners enjoy watching their dogs chase up and down this tiny beach. Passing runners and walkers continue on their way as their dogs divert on to the beach for a quick run and then catch up with their owners.
The county council signage, which is prominent, is ignored. I have often seen families sitting on the wall unable to access the beach as they don’t feel comfortable with the presence of so many dogs.
A number of the dogs defecate or urinate on the sand or on bits of seaweed lying around. Say a word about any of this in a gentle way to the owners and I have found the rebuke to be swift and often abusive. – Yours, etc,
