“Is it not time for Ireland to grow up?”

Can I put it to him that this is not the essence of a healthy relationship?

Sir, – I am writing in relation to Fintan O’Toole’s article “Catherine Connolly should keep her inner Basil Fawlty under wraps” (September 30th).

While O’Toole tried to convince us that Catherine Connolly had said something outrageous about Germany, his logic failed to impress. In fact, he held up a mirror to the colonial mindset that continues to blight progress for people in Ireland.

O’Toole argues that Germany had our back during Covid and because of that we should be happy to tuck quietly into Europe and give no one cause for concern.

Can I put it to him that this is not the essence of a healthy relationship. Is it not time for Ireland to grow up; to be responsive to the needs of our people and at the same time be proud Europeans?

Otherwise, we risk losing the birthright of all our young people and future generations. – Yours, etc,

GERALDINE SIMMIE,
