1921 Irish delegation photo

Sir, – I enjoyed reading Diarmaid Ferriter's recent article on marking the centenary of the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921. ("Political narratives around Treaty centenary will be keenly contested", August 27th).

In the interests of accuracy, it should be pointed out that the photograph of the Irish delegates accompanying the article was not taken on the day that the Treaty was signed.

This should not be surprising given the tense atmosphere that surrounded the fateful signing of this most significant document. Instead the photograph was taken on October 11th, 1921, the day that negotiations between the British and Irish delegations began. It was published in the Irish Independent on the following day. – Yours, etc,

FRANK
