A WOMAN was killed and her brother was seriously injured in a collision on the Strokestown to Elphin road in Co Roscommon yesterday.
The crash happened near the townland of Lugboy at 1pm when the car in which the 83-year-old woman was a passenger and which her 86-year-old brother was driving collided with an articulated truck.
The brother and sister, whose names have not yet been released, are said to be from the area of Elphin.
Both were taken to Roscommon General Hospital where the woman later died of her injuries. Her brother was transferred to University College Hospital Galway where his injuries have been described as serious.
The driver of the articulated truck is said to be uninjured.
The road, which was closed to traffic for several hours yesterday for examination by Garda forensic investigators was later reopened.
Gardaí have said the woman’s death brings the number of people killed on Irish roads so far this year to 14, compared to 15 last January.
Figures published earlier this month showed that 212 people died on Irish roads throughout last year.
