The full programme of the 50th Wexford Festival, which will run from October 18th to November 4th, was launched yesterday by the Taoiseach.

Mr Ahern acknowledged the special place held by Wexford in the international world of opera, and said he was "a great fan" of the festival. He said he believed "the future of the festival is in safe hands".

The National Philharmonic Orchestra of Belarus will play in the pit of the Theatre Royal this year, rather than the RTE-managed National Symphony Orchestra. This means that RTE has to negotiate broadcasting rights with the festival, though agreement seems likely, according to the festival's chief executive, Jerome Hynes.
