A well-known Fianna Fail councillor has collapsed and died while on the campaign trail in Limerick for local TD Willie O'Dea.

Joe Crowley, who was in his 50s and from the North Circular Road area of Limerick, died suddenly while out canvassing for Mr O'Dea.

The father of three adult children had recently spoken about issues with his health last year when he was diagnosed with severe anaemia, and how he felt he was getting back on track.

An ambition to become a councillor for Limerick City North was realised in 2014 when he was elected to the amalgamated authority. He was director of marketing and communications for Mr O'Dea in the last general election.

He was canvassing in Drombanna, Co Limerick when he collapsed suddenly and was taken to University Hospital Limerick. Mr O’Dea met members of his family at the hospital.

Fianna Fail TD Niall Collins said: “He was an outstanding public representative, really committed to his community and the north side of Limerick city. Words escapes us.”

Mr Crowley is survived by his wife Christine and children Hugh (18) Andrew (21) and Vivienne (23).

Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin said he has been taken aback by the death of Cllr Crowley who was a good colleague. He expressed sympathy to his family.

Tanaiste Joan Burton also expressed her sympathy with Cllr Crowley’s family.
