A former president of the Methodist Church in Ireland, Rev Dr Hedley Plunkett, was buried on Saturday following a funeral service at Finaghy Methodist Church, Belfast. The Rev Dr Plunkett, who was almost 90, died last Wednesday.

Born in Lisnaskea, Co Fermanagh, on January 26th, 1917, Hedley Washington Plunkett was the son of Alexander Plunkett, the local creamery manager, and his wife, Edith.

Educated locally, he worked as a counter hand in Dowlers hardware shop in Lisnaskea before becoming a minister.

He was elected president of the church in 1975 and honoured by Washington University with the honorary degree of doctor of divinity. The Rev Dr Plunkett is survived by his wife, Joan, sons Stephen and Randall and daughters Heather and Shirley.
