A man wanted for questioning about the death of his wife in Dublin in 2003 has been arrested on suspicion of shoplifting in London.

Gardaí said they were liasing with police in London after they picked up the man yesterday.

Goodwill Udechukwu (31), a Nigerian national, has not been seen in Ireland since the murder of his Jamaican wife Natasha Gray (25) in Dublin in February 2003.

Ms Gray was found dying in her apartment in Phibsboro, north Dublin, after a violent struggle and was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. Her two young children may have witnessed the attack.

Mr Udechuckwu had only been in Ireland since May 2001 but was refused political asylum. Ms Gray, who had been living and working in Ireland for some time, appeared to have received a number of blows from a blunt instrument.

Mr Udechukwu was held by British police in yesterday afternoon in London and is believed to have given police a false name. But his true identity emerged when his fingerprints were checked.

He is expected to appear in Bow Street Magistrates Court tomorrow on suspicion of shoplifting. Gardai may travel to London to seek his extradition.
