Gardaí in Cork have arrested a man after a vicious assault on an elderly man in his home

Gardaí in Cork have arrested a man after a vicious assault on an elderly man in his home. They are still looking for a second suspect.

Two men forced their way into the home of the victim, who is a widower in his mid-60s, shortly after 8am at Gilabbey Street in the city centre yesterday.

The men were dressed in high visibility jackets and one was carrying a clipboard. They claimed to be from the local authority.

Supt Mick Finn said they beat the man and robbed him of a small sum of money. "They beat him up and robbed him. He had some cuts to his head and was very shaken. He was taken to hospital by neighbours. It was a pretty vicious assault," he said.
