Gardai have arrested a man for questioning following an aggravated burglary in Cork last night in which an Alsatian belonging to the house owner was killed.

Gardaí believe that a man broke into a house in Fairhill area of Cork's northside at about 9pm last night and attacked the dog with a knife, killing him.

The alarm was raised.

Gardaí later arrested a 25-year-old Waterford man. He was taken to Gurranebraher Garda station for questioning.

The man was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act which allows for detention of up to 24 hours before he must be charged or released.
