A man in his 40s has been arrested in Dublin in connection with a serious assault which took place in Kilmainham late on Sunday night.

He is being held in Kilmainham Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

A German national remains in hospital following the assault with a hatchet in the city late on Sunday night.

The attack happened shortly before midnight in Bowbridge Place, Kilmainham.

The man, in his late 20s, sustained severe head injuries in the attack. He is being treated at nearby St James's Hospital.
