Kenny to decide today on deputy and front bench

Mr Enda Kenny will make a final decision today on the selection of a Fine Gael deputy leader and his new frontbench line-up.

Mr Enda Kenny will make a final decision today on the selection of a Fine Gael deputy leader and his new frontbench line-up.

The deputy leadership is expected to come down to either of two of those defeated by Mr Kenny in last week's parliamentary party contest, Mr Richard Bruton or Mr Gay Mitchell.

Mr Kenny spoke with most members of the parliamentary party over the weekend to hear their views on the tactics that should be followed by Fine Gael's depleted Dáil ranks.

Given the loss of seats, Mr Kenny will be able to supply posts to all those interested in them. "In some ways, he has more jobs to give away than he has people," said one party source last night.

He said last week that his 15-strong front bench would be "a mix of youth and experience", which means that the Cork South Central TD, Mr Simon Coveney, and the Laois-Offaly TD, Ms Olwyn Enright, should both have high-profile roles.
