Firefighters were called to the Jameson Experience distillery in Midleton, Co Cork on Wednesday to tackle a small fire which started on the roof of the centre.
One unit from Midleton and one from Cobh attended the scene shortly after 10am today. The fire was quickly brought under control. The cause of the fire is unknown at this juncture.
“There was a minor incident this morning involving a fire at the disused part of the Jameson Experience in Midleton,” a spokeswoman for Irish Distillers said.
“As a precaution the visitor facility was evacuated and the emergency services were called to the scene. The incident was a very minor one and the visitor facility has reopened and is operating as normal.”
The fire came just hours after an event onsite to mark the global sales of five million cases of Jameson this year. It also marked the opening of a new microdistillery by Tánaiste Joan Burton.
When fully operational the new microdistillery in Midleton will produce 400 casks of Irish whiskey per annum, from brewing through to maturation.
Some 410,000 tourists per year visit the Old Jameson Distillery in Dublin and Jameson Experience in Midleton.
