Gardaí have launched an investigation following what has emerged to be a hoax bomb planted underneath a car outside a garda's home in West Dublin yesterday.

The suspect device was discovered by a family member of the garda under his own car parked in the driveway of his Clondalkin home.

The Army Bomb Disposal Unit was called in and the area was sealed off.

Houses along the road were evacuated while a bomb disposal team dealt with the device.

The Army said the device was an elaborate hoax, but was very similar to a pipe bomb and constructed by someone familiar with such devices.

Senior gardaí held a conference at Clondalkin Garda station this morning to discuss the incident and it is understood that precautions have been put in place to protect the garda and his family

The device, which was placed under the back wheel, was spotted by a member of the garda's family on her way to work at around 8am.

The garda has been a member of the force for more than 25 years and is attached to the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation which deals with organised crime.
