A weather warning in place for 15 counties earlier today has been lifted as wind speeds drop across the country.

However Met Éireann has warned of the possibility of some spot flooding due to widespread heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms.

It will continue very windy and showery this afternoon and evening, with heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms occurring.

Southwest to west winds will be strong and gusty countrywide, with gales in exposed places. Highest temperatures 8 to 10 degrees.

Flooding in the midlands severely disrupted train services yesterday, while householders in some areas resorted to pumps to keep rising water levels at bay.

The heavy rainfall and gusting winds of the last week have left part of the Dublin-Sligo rail line under water.

Iarnród Éireann said the extreme weather conditions meant part of the line had to be closed, which necessitated the use of buses to facilitate passengers between the northwest and the capital.

Train services continue to be disrupted today and bus transfers will remain in place all this week between Carrick-on-Shannon and Longford.

Bus transfers are likely to remain in place on the Limerick to Ennis service until mid-March due to flooding on the line at Ballygar.
