A flood warning has been issued for parts of Cork city centre for Thursday morning.

In a statement on Wednesday, Cork City Council said tidal flooding may hit the area before and after high tide at 9am on Thursday.

The flooding may occur due to the combination of a tidal surge, southerly winds, a low pressure area and a spring tide.

The council said Union Quay, Morrison’s Quay, Fr Matthew Quay, South Terrace, Trinity Bridge, George’s Quay, South Mall, Cotter Street, Stable Lane, Lapps Quay, Proby’s Quay, French’s Quay, Crosses Green, Sharman Crawford Street, Wandesford Quay, Lavitt’s Quay, Kyrl’s Street and Kyrl’s Quay, Coal Quay, and other low-lying areas of the city centre could be affected by flooding.

The council said that, while the main impact of flooding would be on traffic, households and businesses in the city should take precautionary measures to protect their properties.

Wind warning

Meanwhile, a status yellow wind warning has been issued by Met Éireann for Thursday, with gusts of up to 100km/h predicted.

The national forecaster said average wind speeds of 45-60km/h were expected on Thursday. Winds will be strongest in coastal areas, it said.

The alert comes into effect at one minute past midnight and will remain in place until 6am on Friday.
