Three arrested after high speed motorway chase

Several garda vehicles damaged when they intercepted and stopped a vehicle on the M1

Two men are in custody today after they were arrested following a high-speed chase on the M1 near Dublin Airport yesterday evening.

A number of garda vehicles were damaged in the incident when they intercepted and stopped a vehicle they believed had been involved in criminal activity in Northern Ireland.

The vehicle was hemmed in by at least three garda cars close to the M50 junction and three people were arrested at the scene. They were taken to Ballymun Garda Station for questioning.

Two of those arrested are in their twenties and the third is a boy in his mid-teens. The teenager was released from custody last night.

A number of emergency vehicles attended the scene of the incident which happened at about 5.30pm.

The arrested men, said by gardaí to be in their early and mid-twenties, are being held at Ballymun Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Two lanes of the M1 southbound and one northbound lane were closed to traffic for a period while gardaí carried out an examination of the scene.

No injuries were reported and a garda spokeswoman said investigations are continuing.
