Gardaí investigating the manslaughter of a homeless man whose body was found in a refuse chute in Cork last week have arrested a 27-year-old man for questioning.

Detectives arrested the suspect in Cork city centre at around 5.30pm on Tuesday and brought him to the Bridewell Garda Station for questioning about the death of Liam Manley.

The man was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act which allows gardai detain suspects for up to 24 hours before they have to be either released or charged.

Gardaí had to use dental records to identify Mr Manley who was originally from Bakers’ Road in Gurranebraher in Cork but had been living with the Simon Community for years.

He was found in a refuse chute at the North Gate Apartment Complex on Bachelor’s Quay at around 5.30pm on May 13th by a maintenance man who went to check on it.

A postmortem by Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Margaret Bolster at Cork University Hospital confirmed Mr Manley had been the victim of an assault.

Gardaí believe Mr Manley’s body may have been in the chute for between one and two days before he was found.
