Gardaí in Co Cork have arrested a man for question after they foiled what they believe was to be an armed raid on a post office in east Cork this morning.
They made the arrest in Aghada village at around 8.30pm after a man was seen wearing a balaclava and carrying a firearm at the rear of the local post office.
Gardaí believe the man was preparing to hold up the post office when the local postmaster opened the premises at 9am.
Gardai in Midleton were alerted and backed up by members of the Regional Support Unit from Cork city. They quickly moved in to disarm and arrest the suspect.
The man, who is in his 30s and from Cork city, was arrested under section 30 of the Offences of the State Act which allows for detention for up to seven days. He was taken to Midleton Garda station.
A firearm recovered at the scene has been sent to the forensics unit in Dublin for balllistic analysis.
