Gardaí have seized cannabis resin worth approximately €2.5 million from a west Dublin criminal gang.

The drugs were found in a car in Rathcoole yesterday in an operation involving officers from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Garda National Support Services, and Garda Headquarters.

The cannabis resin, weighing 350 kilograms, was seized after a tip-off.

Three men, aged 39, 38 and 21, were arrested at the scene and taken to Clondalkin Garda station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.

In follow-up searches, two other men were arrested. They are aged 25 and 28 and are being questioned at at Crumlin and Ballyfermot Garda stations under the same act.

The spokesman said the drugs haul would have to be forensically analysed but may have a potential street value of €2.5 million.
