TRIBUTE WAS paid to the late Dr Michael Russell (88), former bishop of Waterford and Lismore, who died yesterday. His successor Bishop William Lee said he was “deeply saddened” at the news. “I have enjoyed and greatly valued his wisdom and support. Bishop Michael was loved and admired by the people and priests of Waterford and Lismore,” he said.
The late bishop would be remembered “especially for his great love of the church, his deep faith, his prayerfulness, his devotion to Our Lady, his humility, warmth and approachability”, Bishop Lee said. He extended his sincere sympathy to Bishop Russell’s family and friends.
Dr Russell was bishop of Waterford and Lismore from 1965 to 1993. Born in Loughmore, Thurles, Co Tipperary, in 1920, he was educated at the Christian Brothers School in Thurles, before studying for the priesthood at St Patrick’s College in Maynooth.
Ordained in June 1945, he was awarded a doctorate in canon law in 1948.
He was appointed professor of moral theology at St Patrick’s College, Thurles, and lectured there until 1965 – serving as vice-president for a number of years.
Bishop Russell is survived by his brothers Conor and Seán, his sisters-in-laws Madge and Maura, along with many nephews and nieces.
His remains will arrive at Waterford Cathedral at 7.30pm today.
