Video: BMW tests next X5 in Ireland

German car firm’s new SUV spotted during pre-launch tests in Galway

Upcoming third-generation BMW X5 testing in Ireland

A prototype for the upcoming third-generation BMW X5 has been spotted by a reader testing in the west of Ireland. The next X5, codenamed F15 within BMW, is due to feature a much lighter frame, more efficient engines and boast a far more high-tech interior than the current model.

As the video shows, the new SUV is also quite nimble on country roads. Part of that is down to increasing use of aluminium. While it’s not clear which engine is under the bonnet of the test car, we can expect the new X5 to feature the firm’s latest eight-speed automatic transmission paired with a variety of turbocharged engines, including inline six-cylinder and V-8 units.

A turbocharged four-cylinder petrol model has been rumoured but it might prove too much of a challenge to power the big X5 even with the extra weight savings. A hybrid version is also in the pipeline using the same six-cylinder petrol powertrain that’s on offer at present in the latest 5-Series and 3-Series model.

The German-registered test car features the usual BMW camouflage, designed to distract motoring fans from getting a proper perspective on the styling lines of the new car.

We can expect to see it in Irish showrooms towards the end of this year, with a likely public debut at the Frankfurt motor show this autumn.
