Mercedes has issued Irish prices for its new C-Class and SLK range, both launched here last week.

Taking on the look of its SLR supercar sibling, the new hard-topped roadster boasts more than a new look. The SLK's bigger body means more space in cabin and boot - and there are more powerful engines and revised suspension. Prices start at €51,695 for the 1.8-litre SLK200 Kompressor, with the automatic starting at €55,075.

Next is the SLK350 automatic with its impressive seven-speed transmission offering 272bhp at €72,780. The range topper is an SLK 55 AMG, with 5,750cc and 360bhp. Prices for this have yet to be announced.

On a recent test drive we found the SLK 350 to be superb fun with just the right mix of power for the sporty body and chassis.

The line-up will disappoint some who were hoping the Mercedes would offer something between the 3.5-litre and 1.8-litre turbocharged unit. However, other variants are expected in the coming years.

Four years after its May 2000 launch, the C-Class has had some minor tweaking. There's a new front-end with modified bumper, clear-lens headlamps and a revised grille. Suspension, steering and six-speed manual transmission have a more sporty configuration, giving an even more agile driving experience.

There's also a new 192 bhp supercharged four-cylinder engine for the saloon and estate, while the C220 CDI now has an output of 150 bhp, seven more than before.

Prices for the new saloon start at €40,850 for the C180 and €44,400 for the C200 CDI. The C220 CDI is €47,900. The sports coupe range starts at €38,075 for the C180 Sports Coupe and at €41,600 for the C200 CDI Sports Coupe.
